It’s raining so hard in San Salvador right now. The cracks of lightning are right over my head, and the giant, speeding bullets of rain sound like splashing knuckles trying to break the windows of my little green-walled hotel room. Yesterday driving into the city we literally drove up through a rain storm from the airport and when we arrived on the other side, I could see the big, lush volcano that looms over the city, it’s foothills shrouded in mist. The driveway at my hotel was bone dry, even though it’s less than a mile from where we had been caught in a downpour. Todays’ storm hit directly at the hotel, though even as I type this, it’s fading away in a rumble of low thunder, and now I can hear birds beginning to sing out the window.
One great event that happened in New York during my commute-enforced bloggio-silence was the launch party for Edible Manhattan magazine. On a lovely — and I mean lovely — September afternoon, a friend and I met down at the South Street Seaport for an evening of donuts, oysters, cheese, bread, pizza, pulled pork, apples, pears, chocolate, and one too many wine tastings. Everywhere we looked were beautiful, hungry New Yorkers chowing down on delicious, local, handcrafted foods prepared and lovingly served by a cotillion of even more beautiful New Yorkers. (Handing out quarter-slices of fresh-fried coconut donuts makes your face more radiant; it’s a fact, proven by scienticians.)
The occasion was the aforementioned magazine, launching its first issue this month. All sorts of great articles in there about kitchens and donuts and check out the long article about the provenance and qualities of New York City water (better than you think!), quoting yours truly, sounding a bit catty to my shame.
The party started with a wine-tasting featuring only Long Island wines. Verrrry interesting. Good New York dairy cheeses, too! Then, out on the cobblestone pedestrian walks of the Seaport were two dozen stalls featuring all-local food and drink. We wandered from stall to stall, grazing like cattle, and ended up drunk on free beer (raspberry stout anyone? it’s more bad-ass than it sounds).
Rachel Graville, fellow northwesterner, foodie warrior-princess, and all around good person, was the one responsible for this, as Edible’s new events coordinator. Coffee events with Edible Manhattan and Edible Brooklyn should be coming down the pike soon!
